Conversion & Personal Background:
I was born on March 21, 1975 in Upstate New York, in the city of Albany and raised with one younger sister. I was brought up in what’s known as an “Oneness Pentecostal Church.” They are called “Oneness Pentecostals” because they believe in only one person in the Godhead and reject the doctrine of the Trinity. They also believe in baptismal regeneration “in Jesus name only” for salvation, and deny assurance of salvation to any who are not. My father was a minister in this church and my family was very active in it.
I had questions about what my church taught, but never really doubted what I believed, until I graduated from high school to attend the State University of New York at Buffalo. It was there that I met Jennifer, who is now my beautiful wife, and was impressed by her walk with the Lord. She actually lived out what she believed and had a growing relationship with God. I was used to seeing a lot of “Sunday only Christianity” from many at my church and was impressed that someone so young would take her walk with the Lord so seriously. I began attending church with her and discovered that her church believed in and taught the Trinity. While I rejected their beliefs, I could not deny that there was something different about their lives. I was convinced that I did not have this same relationship with God and knew I needed it.
About a year later, I spent the summer in Maryland with my Aunt and was introduced to some believers from an evangelical church. They spent much of their time in Bible Study, sharing their faith, and while I knew it was right, I found it boring. After noticing the tremendous joy that was theirs I wondered, “If I am a Christian, why don’t I enjoy the things of God?” So, I continued to fellowship with them, hoping to get what they had.
As we spent time together, they eventually figured out what my beliefs were and we argued every day about baptism and the Trinity. I would attempt to defend what my church taught me and they would consistently answer me with Scripture. Eventually, I figured out I was not arguing with man, but with God. After one particular conversation, I went home broken and I confessed before the Lord that I didn’t really know who He was. I was convinced I was a sinner and needed to be saved.
The next day my life was radically changed! I wanted to talk to anything moving about the gospel. I shared the gospel at work, at the bus stop, and with my family. I even had an opportunity to go back to my home church and share what I had learned. It didn’t take me long to realize there were many people in the church who were also confused about the truth, and God began to give me a burden for the church as well.
To make a long story short, after college I moved back to Maryland because of the connection I had with the church there. I continued to grow in my hunger for God’s Word, as well as the desire to teach it accurately. At the encouragement of my wife and John MacArthur (who I met at a Shepherd’s conference) I began attending Washington Bible College. A year later, God sovereignly put me in contact with the only Master’s Seminary Graduate in the whole state of Maryland. He had a small church plant with about 30 people and after one message I knew it was the place I should be. I began serving with him almost immediately. The accurate and careful handling of God’s Word was modeled for me every week. I was given the opportunity to serve as an elder in training, lead the Outreach ministry, and preach regularly.
After graduating Bible College I knew Master’s Seminary was the only Seminary I wanted to attend. I saw the character that God produced through this Seminary in my Pastor’s life and in the life of another good friend, who used to minister at Grace Community Church. They were the type of servants I wanted to be.
I have already seen the impact my training at The Master’s Seminary has made on my life and ministry. There has not been one professor that I did not desire to imitate in some way. Their love for God’s Word and His church are apparent. Their concern for personal holiness and purity are obvious. Their examples alone were worth the price of the tuition and sacrifice my family has made. By God’s grace, we will be worthy stewards of the resources He has entrusted to us, and our effectiveness for ministry will be multiplied in the future.
